When Menopause Comes

By: Dr. Linda Wright

Do you remember when Suzanne Somers brought “bioidentical hormones” to our attention as the solution to many menopause-related symptoms? Was she right? Yes and no. If you have a personal or family history of cancer, for example, you have good reason to steer clear of any kind of hormones – HRT (Premarin, Provera, and Prempro) and bioidenticals (BHRT).

There are questions whether bioidenticals are causing problems, but no studies have been done; bioidenticals are not patentable so there is no incentive for drug companies to fund the research. One concern, for example, is that the use of any kind of hormone replacement therapy suppresses your own hormone-producing glands and you stop making natural hormones on your own.

Many women want to balance their hormones, BUT:

•They can’t take prescription hormones because they are contraindicated

•They just don’t want to take prescription hormones – of any kind

•They tried prescription hormones and for whatever reason don’t want to continue taking them

FDA CONTRAINDICATIONS FOR BIOIDENTICAL HORMONES

•Current, past, or suspected breast cancer

•Deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism

•Active liver disease

•Recent angina, myocardial infarction

•Known or suspected estrogen-sensitive malignant conditions

•Porphyria cutanea tarda

•Undiagnosed genital bleeding

•Untreated endometrial hyperplasia

•Untreated hypertension

The Menopause Hormone Imbalance

Menopause is a time when women’s hormones have dropped substantially. Hormones in women and men are at their peak somewhere around age 35. Then they start to drop. Menopause symptoms tell us the body is trying to pass a baton. Nature’s design is that when our reproductive years come to an end, the ovaries will stop making estrogen and progesterone and hand that baton to the adrenal glands. But in our modern society, the adrenals say: “You have to be joking! I’m so stressed as it is. No way I can take on that job too.” And then come the hot flashes, weight gain, mood swings, and other symptoms of things going haywire in the body.

Truth is, you don’t have to hand the baton to medical doctors and the pharmaceutical industry. I will show you how your body can make its own hormones and bring an end to those uncomfortable menopause symptoms. Those symptoms are the body’s cry for attention: “I need to find my balance again, please help me do that.” It’s a balancing act that is done when your body is given the building blocks it needs to manufacture hormones. Your body can be reminded, with natural approaches, to re-engage.

There are safe, effective alternatives to hormone replacement therapy  – both the old standards and the newer bioidenticals.
